Our new LTO Ultrium data cartridges are the most durable, reliable option for corporate storage and mission critical data backup. We have leverage its unrivaled experience with magnetic particle and tape production technology, cartridge mechanism, and recording media to create these new high-speed, high capacity cartridges.

Realizes stable, high-output characteristics for both data and servo signals

LTO Ultrium 2 tape, with a physical width of 12.65mm (1/2 inch), incorporates 512 recording tracks. (LTO Ultrium 1 incorporates 384 tracks.) Each track measures a mere 20.2 mm in width. A pre-recorded servo signal is utilized to enable accurate writing to, and reading from.

These extremely narrow tracks, so naturally along with outstanding signal output of the data itself, the tape must boast a stable, high-precision servo signal output as well. We, through application of advanced magnetic particle technology for coated-type tape, as well as advanced tape manufacturing technology, has achieved an ideal magnetic layer structure and layer thickness, thereby realizing stabilized output for both data and servo signals.

The thickness of the layer is controlled to the nanometer *1 order. Moreover, adoption of precision slitter technology, to reduce irregularities in tape width to the lowest degree possible; a high-precision servo writing system; and other measures are combined so as to realize stable data and servo signal output, thus making our data storage tape of choice in the LTO Ultrium 2 format.

Super FinavinxTM metal particles realize stable output

Boasting an original three-layered structure, Super Finavinx metal magnetic particles are outstanding in terms of their short wavelength output and aging stability characteristics. This realizes stable output characteristics over a long duration and a low error rate.

Super-thin dual-layer coating technology for LTO Ultrium recording

TDK LTO Ultrium features a two-layer coating structure. First a non-magnetic layer (the lower layer) is formed, whose purpose is to enhance the lubricity and smoothness of the magnetic layer. Above this, a magnetic layer of extremely fine Super Finavinx metal magnetic particles, designed for optimum compatibility with the LTO Ultrium format's recording wavelength, is applied in a high-precision, thin-film coating. The two layers form a sharply defined interface, resulting in an extremely precise, uniform magnetic layer with thickness controlled to the nanometer order.

Electron Beam Curing EB Binder and Heat-Cured TDC Binder realizes high durability

To ensure that the non-magnetic and magnetic layers are combined in a way to fulfil their ideal functions, two types of binders are utilized: an electron beam curing EB binder and heat-cured TDC binder. These enable the forming of a robust layered structure, creating a media that stands up to repeated hard read/write use.

A high-precision mechanism adopted to the concept that "the cartridge mechanism is part of the tape drive.

In an LTO Ultrium data cartridge, tape run commences by means of the drive's retractor mechanism grasping the leader pin assembly in the cartridge, and the tape is set onto the drive's take-up reel.

This is why we applies the concept that the functions of the cartridge and its mechanism must be treated as part of the tape drive. Each mechanical component is composed of material matched to its specific function, and designed for durability and reliability.

The leader pin assembly in particular, which undergoes repeated engagement and disengagement each time the cartridge is inserted and removed, is made of ideal material for its purpose and has been robustly constructed to retain its original precision, even after hard repeated engagements with the drive's retractor mechanism.

Even after 25,000 *2 or more loads/unloads, it maintains its operational stability.

Traceability system instantaneously tracks quality history, while further supporting high reliability

At our company, the quality history of each individual cartridge, from the tape manufacturing process to the production, is recorded in a database. Use of a two-dimensional bar code attached on a pancake, or by data stored in the cartridge's memory (LTO-CM), provides for an instantaneous traceability system that further attests to the meticulous quality control system supporting the high reliability of TDK LTO Ultrium data cartridges.
