TDK LAUNCHES WRITE-ONCE/READ-MANY LTO ULTRIUM 3 DATA CARTRIDGE

- Advanced Data Cartridge Delivers Unbeatable Performance and Capacity; Protects Important Data with a Write-Once/Read-Many Design

December 15, 2004 - TDK Corporation, a world leader in digital recording solutions, announces the launch of its D2406W-LTO3 LTO Ultrium 3 data cartridge, WORM (write-once/read-many) type recording media specially formulated for the LTO (Linear Tape Open) Ultrium format. The new TDK LTO Ultrium 3 data cartridges will be available on December 15th.

Last month, TDK began shipping its first LTO Ultrium 3 product, the rewritable D2406-LTO3 data cartridge. The D2406-LTO3 data cartridge was the world's first to pass testing by the CVE (Compliance Verification Entity), the organization responsible for certifying LTO standardization1. The new D2406W-LTO3 cartridge delivers same certified performance in combination with the added security of a write-once specification.

Featuring large 400GB2 capacity and a rapid 80MB/s3 data transfer rate, the D2406W-LTO3 cartridge is ideal for corporations, research organizations, medical facilities, government agencies and all other institutions that must electronically store numerous documents and other materials. The cartridge's write- once specification provides superior protection for files that cannot legally be erased or altered. For example, the Securities and Exchange Commission requires securities brokerage houses to retain records for a number of years4. Similar restrictions apply to public documents and electronic patient records.

The newly developed D2406W-LTO3 cartridge benefits from several exclusive TDK innovations. They include ultra-fine Super Finavinx metal magnetic particles, a highly uniform dual layer tape coating technology, and precision tape slitting technology that realizes totally stable recording and playback. A low error rate is ensured even after repeated hard usage.

A two-tone cartridge with blue-grey and light grey sections enables instant recognition of the D2406W-LTO3 as write-once media.
